HEP C TESTING & TREATMENT
HOW HEPATITIS C IS CONQUERED.
There is no referral required to visit a specialist at Conquer Clinic. Our Hepatitis C test has up to three parts:
An initial test determines if you have ever been exposed to the virus.
Being exposed does not necessarily mean that you have Hep C. If this test is negative, no further testing is required.
If you have been exposed, a second test detects what strain of Hep C you have been infected with (genotype) and how much is in your blood (viral load).
Or the virus will be undetectable, which means that it’s either too early to detect it or that your body has cleared the virus on its own.
If a viral load is detected, a third test detects how much fibrosis is in the liver.
If the liver has a fibrosis score of 2.0 or higher, Conquer Clinic will request approval for medication coverage on your behalf. Once approval for medical coverage is received your treatment begins right away – often within just one week.
Hep C is treated with oral medication that is easy to take and has few side effects. The length of treatment takes from 8 to 24 weeks depending on the genotype of the virus, your level of cirrhosis and any previous Hep C treatment.
If the virus is undetectable 24 weeks after completing the treatment, the virus is considered cured. So far treatments have been successful in curing over 90% of infections.
Once cured, you are unlikely to ever have a liver problem from Hepatitis C unless you are exposed to the virus again.
